Equality and Diversity

Equality and diversity - Themes

  • Projects will indicate specific aims and objectives on Equality and Diversity to engage workers disadvantaged in the labour market
  • All projects will be expected to outline a clear equality and diversity strategy on learning and skills with review and measurement tools
  • Support for specifically targeted projects within projects, e.g. BME groups, disabled workers, older workers, young workers etc.

Equality and diversity - Supporting Information

A universal definition for equality and diversity is not always easy to find and the two terms are sometimes used without much clarity. Some guidelines could be:

Equality

  • Considering disadvantaged groups
  • Breaking down barriers and combating discrimination
  • Ensuring fair and just access to opportunities

Diversity

  • Understanding and celebrating differences
  • Valuing difference whilst growing the shared ground
  • Respect, value and harnessing individual potential in order to contribute to strong collective approaches

Unions are committed to equality and diversity as a key union principle. Your project will be required to demonstrate that you are developing a clear union equality and diversity strategy in specific relation to learning and skills. Bids should:

  • Outline how equality and diversity impacts on how individuals and groups access effective learning and development
  • Outline equality and diversity issues for your membership base including specific groups of workers whose learning needs you may need to consider
  • Identify how the project will develop a union strategy with clear aims and objectives
  • Identify how the project will gather baseline information and monitoring and review mechanisms / tools to measure the effectiveness of your equality and diversity strategy
  • Identify data that can be collected to support your strategy and then to detail how you will collect it, store it and then produce information demonstrating your effectiveness within this theme.
  • Training and development for project staff, ULRs and union reps to support Equality and Diversity in relation to learning.
