Skills for Work - Supporting Information
The theme Skills for Work includes both Skills for Life and first full level 2/3 learning. This is intended to help unions develop strategic approaches to both encourage Skills for Life learners to progress to full Level 2, or in some cases Level 3 qualifications where that is appropriate, but also to address Skills for Life needs for learners on vocational courses.
Most adults who don’t have any formal qualifications at full Level 2 will have acquired lots of skills and expertise at work, but are likely to have some Skills for Life gaps. Addressing those gaps alongside a first full Level 2 or 3 will not only enable learners to achieve the vocational qualification more effectively, but will also address the underpinning skills which help members face change more confidently.
Some approaches to help the project may be:
- Ensuring that learners going on first Level 2 or 3 courses undertake a Skills for Life assessment as well as a vocational one and also get opportunities to address any Skills for Life needs identified
- Developing proactive approaches to provide progression routes for Skills for Life learners to full Level 2/3
- Ensuring that Train to Gain meets the union and employer Skills for Work strategy and the needs of learners
