Delivering Learning on a Local Level
CWU have recruited, trained, supported and developed 1,300 union learning representatives (ULRs) since 2002 and the ULRs are central to the CWU learning and skills strategy in the workplace. CWU have integrated Union Learning Reps (ULRs) into the wider union structures through regional learning committees, who are responsible for developing and delivering learning strategies on a local level.
CWU learning centres are supported by a network of ULRs who are committed to facilitating their fellow members' learning journey. Many of them have become ULRs after experiencing what union learning has done for them. CWU place particular focus on emphasising that ULRs are part of the union structure. Learning also provides opportunities for retention and recruitment and has been used in call centres to open dialogue with new employers and roll out learning into new areas of companies where the union previously had no representation.
ULRs are recognised as an established part of CWU and have been instrumental in the growth of community based learning centres run by CWU. CWU have opened 145 learning centres across the UK and they are situated in workplaces, communities, temples, sports centres and many other venues. Community learning continues to grow as the CWU seek to build a wider presence and demonstrate their commitment to learning in the workplace.
Jacky Morrey, CWU Regional Committee Secretary said “We have strong, capable ULRs in the regions that support each other every step of the way in order to achieve a common goal. I cannot find words to express how grateful I am to my fellow Regional Committee members for the hard work that they put into this project and I am proud to taken this journey with them”.
