Aspire Housing
UCATT ulrs have been involved in learning, training and development at the Housing Association, Aspire Housing, since the learning agreement was signed 5 years ago, and some 50 operatives have benefited from Skills for Life courses on offer.
ULR Geoff Durber said “Aspire Housing has really been proactive in promoting workplace learning. Managers support our vision, even though they have performance targets to hit, by allowing staff time off the tools to train during paid work time.”
Shining Stars!
Geoff is particularly proud of a group of workers he calls “shining stars” whose learning has been supported by Aspire Housing at the request of the ulrs. Geoff said:”One told me it was the first qualification he had ever had, and another was able to buy a magazine for the first time in his life – before the course he hadn’t been able to read or write. He can now read work orders and fill in paperwork, which of course also benefits the company”. Learning and Development Manager Debbie Lightfoot said” Learning reps have played a major role in establishing the learning culture we have. There is only so much a manager can do, so having an impartial person that the people feel they can talk to in confidence is invaluable in encouraging learning”.
